My PhD thesis examined the concreteness (C) effect in word processing. The work consisted of three parts.
The first part examined the C effect while manipulating context availability (CA) and familiarity (FAM).
The second part examined whether imaging activity influences the C effect by manipulating the availability of the non-verbal/imaging system. The manipulations were by selecting participants with individual differences in image ability and through a task that encouraged image activity, in contrast to a task that did not encourage such activity.
The third part examined the influences of stimuli time exposure and restricting the intervals between trials on the C effect. In addition, I tested how pre-exposure of the stimuli influences the C effect.
