Investigation of the effect of sample preparation methods (grinding,
acid treatment, Ca-saturation) and sample-insertion position of
slabs and slides on illite-'crystallinity' values
as measured by X-ray diffraction.
Abstracts of current research :
1. Relationship between degree of very-low-grade metamorphism
and the development of slaty cleavage.
2. Parameters of intensity of slaty-cleavage fabrics : cleavage
morphology (cleavage/bedding fissility ratio), microfabrics, bulk
X-ray diffraction intensity ratios of phyllosilicate reflections
on cleavage- and bedding-parallel polished slabs, and X-ray texture
goniometry (reflected and transmitted modes). Comparison between
these criteria of strain and slaty-cleavage intensity in the incipient
stages of slaty-cleavage development of the Helvetic zone of the
Swiss Alps, Tasman belt of eastern Australia, and central-European
Hercynides.
X-ray diffraction intensity ratios of phyllosilicate
reflections in cleavage- and bedding-parallel polished slabs and
cleavage/bedding fissility ratios in Tertiary flysches of the
Helvetic zone of the Swiss Alps:
For a series of Tertiary flysches, the two criteria
of incipient slaty cleavage intensity criteria, (a) X-ray diffraction
intensity ratios of phyllosilicate 001 reflections in cleavage-
and bedding parallel slabs, and (b) cleavage/bedding fissility
ratios, show a roughly linear relationship but with a wide scatter.
The fits are appreciably better if populations showing different
cleavage morphology (closely- vs widely-spaced cleavage; crenulation
vs non-crenulation cleavage) and lithology (silt- and fine-sand
size quartz content) are plotted separately. The lack of correspondence
shows that the cleavage/bedding fissility ratio is not only dependent
on the phyllosilicate orientation, but also on the fabric, in
particular the morphology of the cleavage domains; the relationship
between the two parameters can provide a useful indication of
the type of incipient cleavage fabric developed. Additional use
of the intersection/bedding fissility ratio i/b is likely to help
in adressing the effect of lithology, particularly the effect
of the initial bedding anisotropy.
3. Differences between the chemical composition of phengite/illite
and chlorite in cleavage domains, microlithons, and chlorite-mica
'stacks' in slates.
4. UV-fluorescence spectra of pollen, spores and algae; morphology
of nannoplankton; and composition of apatite as maturation parameters
in Upper-Cretaceous and Lower-Tertiary sedimentary rocks around
natural combustion hearths in the northern Negev.
5. Effect of sample-preparation methods (grinding, acid treatment,
Ca-saturation) and sample-insertion position in X-ray diffractometer
on illite-'crystallinity' values.
